In the heart of the Atlas Mountains, Morocco boasts an extraordinary gem – Djebel Toubkal, the highest summit in Northern Africa. Its accessibility from the vibrant city of Marrakech has made it a prime destination for adventurers seeking a taste of the mountains. Join us on a two-day expedition to conquer the “mountain of mountains” and behold the breathtaking vistas of the Moroccan Atlas, the Marrakech plains to the north, and the distant Sahara to the south, all wrapped in the enigmatic heat mists.
Our adventure begins with a two-hour private vehicle transfer from Marrakech to Imlil, a picturesque mountain village that serves as the gateway to the Toubkal massif. As you entrust your bags to the local porters, your ascent toward the refuge commences. Following the meandering canals that irrigate the terraced crops, you'll be captivated by the scenery. After a well-deserved lunch break at Sidi Chamarouch's quaint village, the landscape becomes more arid. Your companions on this leg of the journey are the bleating of goats and sheep, tended by young shepherds. Nightfall finds you at the Toubkal Refuge (Neltner Refuge, 3210 m).
Day two greets you with the promise of summiting Toubkal. The ascent presents no major difficulties as you follow a valley that eventually leads to a pass. A broad ridge then guides you to the summit, where an awe-inspiring panorama unfolds. From this vantage point, you'll dominate a significant portion of the Atlas and the plains of Haouz to the north, while gazing southwards reveals Ouarzazate in the distance. Your descent retraces the path from the refuge, culminating in a picnic. Subsequently, you'll make your way back to Imlil via yesterday's itinerary, where your driver awaits to transport you back to Marrakech.
While the ascent doesn't require advanced mountaineering skills, a good level of fitness and acclimatization to high altitudes is recommended.
The ideal time is during the spring and autumn months when the weather is pleasant, and the trails are not too crowded.
Participants should be in good physical condition. Age is less of a concern than overall fitness.
Essential items include sturdy hiking boots, warm clothing, a sleeping bag, and a backpack. A detailed packing list will be provided upon booking.
You can book this expedition through our website or by contacting our customer service. Make sure to reserve your spot well in advance, as availability is limited.
